Returning to Sport After an Injury — A Practical Guide

Returning to Sport After an Injury — A Practical Guide

Returning to sport after injury is rarely linear. The athletes who come back strongest treat the recovery itself as training.

Phase 1: Symptom control

Manage pain and swelling. Restore range. Move every day, even if only a little.

Phase 2: Capacity

Rebuild strength and tissue tolerance. Progressively load the injured area.

Phase 3: Sport-specific

Plyometrics, change-of-direction, sprint mechanics. Start cautious, build with intent.

Phase 4: Return-to-play

Objective testing — strength symmetry, hop tests, sport-specific drills — before clearance.
